Remembering Home

We had a wonderful trip home and have now been back 'home' for 1 week. Before we left, we collected all pictures to make one comprehensive memory of our trip. Each family member took time to write their favorite memories on card stock and placed them thoughout the photo album. It's a great memory of our trip. Here are the memories of our famil to share with my family back home...

Omar says "Momma, remember when..."

  • "Mr. Puffer Bill goes to Pumkin Ridge and then back again. His ears get so cold." (a bedtime story Grandma read to him every night about trains).

  • "The BIG MAN! He's HUGE!!" (Paul Bunyan Land)

  • "Grandma, Grandpa, Auntie Laura, Auntie Sarah, Uncle Jason, Baby Grace. I love them all!"

  • "Fireworks! Fireworks! Fireworks! They same BOOOOM, BOOOOM!"

  • "My green truck. I go so fast...hahaha!"

  • "Yeah, Sadie is with Grandma, Maggie is with Laura, Riley is with Sarah and Shiloh is with Jason" (the family dogs).

  • "Swimming, swimming, swimming. I go swimming again?!"

  • "Baby Grace, she is soooooo liiiiiitttttle! You have to be gentle."

  • "Grandpa's boat, Jason's red boat, and the green boat!"

Aisha says her favorties are...

  • "We were laughing soooooo really hard!" (When Mommy, Daddy and Omar went shopping and she stayed with Auntie Sarah, Baby Grace and Uncle Jason).

  • "Baby Grace is so cute!"

  • "Oooo La La Spa with Fancy Nancy" (Grandma Nancy's spa designed after Fancy Nancy books).

  • "Fishing....I caught a fish Momma!"

  • Riding on the boat, "Grandpa drives really fast! It's fun...hahaha!"

  • "Jimmy Johns" (her new found favorite food that we don't have in Jordan and keeps asking for).

  • "Going somewhere fun every day!"

  • "Grandma is soooo fun!"

  • "My Princess car. It's so pretty and I can drive it really good!"

For sure this is a short list and the kids continue to remember their times in Minnesota and tell me their "Remember when...."!

We had a wonderful time on vacation. Visiting family and friends is always great, but when you live so far away...the time is precious! Thank you to my parents, sisters, brother-in-law, family and friends for everything while we were home! Watching the kids play and grow with each of you was so much fun for Yanal and I as parents! We love you all!!

Siblings.

Siblings.

My two sisters and I have a total of 4 years between us...in my opinion, this is perfect! I always knew I wanted my kids to be close to each other in age. This way they can play together at an early age, go through school together, share friends, share interests, and go through lifes changes and challenges together. Inshallah (God Willing) they will attend high school graduation within a couple years of each other, followed by college, college graduation, weddings, marriage, pregnancy, and raising their own babies!

I became pregnant with Omar the same month Aisha turned 1 years old; therefore, Aisha was 21 months old when Omar was born. I will admit to anyone that the first year was not easy. Having two, essentially, babies is a challenge. Two in diapers, two waking up in the middle of the night, two needing bottles/frequent feedings, spoon feeding two hungry little mouths, bathing two slippery bodies at the same time, ensuring independant quality time with one while the other is sleeping...juggling two babies was challenging.

Then...babies grow. The grow into toddlers who are able to feed themselves, tell me their needs, walk independantly, help me around the house. They become friends who run and play with each other. Who talk to each other. Who fight with each other ("I want Barney!" "But, I want Dora!"). Who make deals with each other ("I'm first and your next. Okay?" "Okay.") Who love each other ("I love you, Boo-Boo" "No.....I love YOOOOOOOU!")

No doubt, we decided to have our kids close in age, so that at this age they can have a play-mate, a friend, a sibling to go through life with!

Here are some recent pictures we wanted to share with everyone of our wonderful kids playing together! Alhumdillah (Thank God) for such wonderful, healthy children!

Parenting

Life. Isn't life interesting?! You are born into a loving family and follow along with the rules, not knowing they are being made up as they go. We are young, and we think our parents are experts who know exactly what they are doing. We love them for everything they are doing. Then we become teenagers and rebel. Rebel against every rule they impose and every thought of what they tell us to be. We think they just don't get me. Then on to our college and early marriage years. We become friends. We learn to understand that they are human. We are able to discuss different thoughts and yet see the similarities. We are now parents ourselves. We think to ourselves - How wonderful they were. How much they sacrificed for me. How difficult I was. How much they taught me. How great they are.

As you know, I live about 7,000 miles from home. I am raising two small people, ages 3 1/2 and nearly 2 years of age. Living so far, gives me a unique experience. An unique perspecitve. An unique thought about parenting. I don't live the same life as I did; therefore, my children are living a different life from my own up bringing. I grew up amongst the lakes, plains, and forests of Minnesota. They are growing up amongst the desert sands and mountains of Jordan. I am surrounded by a different culture, with a different thought of child raising norms. I struggle with the differences at times and at others I embrace the new ideas.

I don't know if I would do so much if I were near, but I am far, and I often find myself thinking: What would my parents have done? How did they make their point clear of what is expected of us? How did my parents handle such a situation? What did they do to raise three young girls, who are sucessful and respectful young women of today? And how can I be more like my parents? I am trying to be creative in my children's learning experience. To give them similar memories to those that I have.

My Dad was always the one who influenced and pushed my thoughts. To 'think outside of the box', he used to tell me. He use to also teach me about the natural world - the trees, the weather, and the world that surrounds us. I have fond memories of walking through the woods with him as he would teach me about the different types of trees, cloud patterns, northern lights, calls of the birds, shrubs, bushes, and flowers in the forest. Until this day I love the natural world more than the city.

Amman, for those who don't know, has little nature. The nature is there, but you have to really search for it. My husband, as I, so much enjoy the nature, the trees, and the earth - so we search to find the nature that is hidden amongst the stone and concrete of Amman. We walk the olive groves, spend time at his Dad's farm, walk underneath the pine and oak trees with our children. I spend time teaching my little people about the pine cones and acorns-how they are food for the squirrels and are seeds to be watered to spout as new trees. We teach them about listening quietly, to hear the birds sing to each other and watch as they bounce in flight above the trees. Teaching them about the clouds, the sun, the moon, the rain, the snow, and the natural world to the limit a 3 year old can understand. I love watching them learn!

My Mother is also an inspiration. She was always patient - or at least appeared to be. She never really yelled or lost her temper. I have fond memories of her crafty ideas. She not only had crafts to keep us busy and out of trouble, but she also sat down and did the projects with us. She taught us how to sew, cross stitch, paper machet, paint, stencil. We made ghosts for Halloween, Santa for Christmas, treasure hunts for birthdays, sewed stuffed animals for the fun of making something, and made dresses for the new school year. She always welcomed us in the kitchen and taught us how to bake and cook as her Mom taught her.

I now spend time with my kids making simple art projects and crafts. My daughter and I enjoy going to the 'bookstore' as they call them in Jordan, which are where one goes to get markers, paints, colored paper, etc. and I ask my Mom to send the Grandkids fun crafty gifts or learning gifts from the USA....(because those who know, there are not many in Jordan and if you find them you will definately pay extra for them!) Both my kids love to cook and bake with Mommy...and they love to tell Daddy that they helped Mommy make the dinner!

I hope to live up to the parenting of my parents. To raise good, intellegent, thoughtful, respectful children. To carry on with those special times I had with my parents to my children. To give my children what I had, and to also let them have what my husband had. I hope to shape these little people into two adults who can take the best from both worlds and make the world their own.

As I watched my two little people riding on the back of a donkey in my Father-in-laws farm the other day - the beautiful, rocky, brown mountains were the background and the glow from the setting sun warmed the setting - I thought to myself how completely different the life is for them here in Jordan than it was for me in Brainerd, MN -but it isn't a bad different, it is okay and it was so beautiful as they giggled and laughed on the back of the donkey. I want them to be happy, to enjoy life, and to learn from the world around us. I also want to ensure I am giving them what I had, what I learned, a part of me, and a part of my parents!

I love you Mom and Dad for everything you taught me and for everything you sacrificed for me and my sisters! We are looking forward to this summer when we can ride on the boat, warm ourselves by the evening campfire, run in the grass barefoot, and watch the birds sing in your backyard! We love and We miss you!

The Difference Between Two

Hello All. Sorry I haven't written for a while. Between all the activities during Ramadan and not being able to log into my blog...it's been a while since I last posted.

The story of this week are my two precious little children. How two children, with the same parents, growing up in the same household, living through the same experiences, can be so different. How amazing and mind boggling it is!

Little Miss: My first of two. She is 3 years and 3 months old. She was always the quiet type. When she was a baby, I would bring her to meetings at work (you know, those ones scheduled on my day off). My coworkers were always amazed at how quiet and well behaved she was as she would sit for one, two and sometimes three hours at a time. I was thankful that she was so well behaved, as I didn't have daycare for her and no where to bring her other than with me. However, I didn't know how well behaved and how quiet she was until I had little one number two.

Little Boo: My second of two. He is 1 year, 6 months, and 24 days. If I knew him before I knew her I would have wondered what was wrong with her. Why is she so quiet, why doesn't she move? Instead, I just wonder, why won't he sit down?! He is a busy, busy, busy little boy. He goes and goes and goes, until he crashes into his blanket and its there is sleeps, until he's at it again! He has always been this way, since before he was born. He has met all his milestones early: raising his head off my shoulder at day 3, running after his sister by 10 months, kicking the ball the next month, speaking over 60 words including 3 word sentences in two languages by 18 month - Mashallah - he simply amazes me....and exhauss me :o).

The other day, after breaking our fast, we went to visit Hubby's cousin would just gave birth to her 4th baby. In addition to her other three children, there were another six children for a total of 9 kids - ranging from the age of 2 years to nine years. My daughter and I were the first to arrive and she sat with the adults for a little while. I knew she would be nervous meeting all the new kids, so we took it slow. We walked to the door to where the kids were all watching TV and playing. She held my hand, her left hand had a sweaty grip to mine and her right hand held tightly to her favorite Teddy Bear. She looked up at me and said, "Bear is scared just a little bit". So we sat together and watched the friendly, yet unfamiliar faces of each child. One by one, each little face and each little hand came by to greet Little Miss and invite her to play. As each one passed, she got closer and closer to me, and more and more uneasy. Before I knew it she was curled in a ball, face buried in the couch, behind me, refusing to get out of this position. I tried to calmly help her relax, just making things worse. Actually, her best cousin, S. , was there too and I encouraged her to go sit by him. Nope. She wanted to sit with Mom and with the adults. This back and forth of uneasiness went on three times before she decided one of the little girls was safe to play with. (and by the end of the night she loved all the little girls and didn't like any of the boys! Until now, she continues to talk about all her friends she made at the party)!

Little Boo's reaction to the same get together, about an hour later, when he arrived with his father. He and Dad entered the front gate. Dad says hello to the adults sitting outside. Little Boo enters the front gate, sees the kids (through the wide open door) playing inside. He streaks right past the adults, runs for the stairs with a huge smile and lots of giggles, triea to run up the stairs, falls as he is running too fast, stands in the doorway, looks at the kids to say HELLO, I'M HERE, LETS PLAY!

Amazing, how to kids can be so different! I love them both in so many ways, for so many reasons! They are amazing. They are so different and both so special. We are so blessed to have them in our lives. Alhumdillah.

Things are Looking Up

Hello All. Thanks for listening/reading my last downer of an entry. I just wanted to let you all know that things are getting better. I am starting to understand my job and starting to like it. I guess it has taken me quite sometime to get my thoughts around not being a nurse and getting that nasty cold out of my system. Yeah, we are all healthy at the moment! It has been 2 months since we started passing around sickness in this home. Alhumdillah, we are all feeling better and are able to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather. The weather has been great. In the 60-70's, sunny and beautiful. We have been heading to the park and running around outside. A little sunshine always does the body good!

The kids are great. Little Miss will be 3 in the next few weeks. I can't believe it, my baby 3?! However, she is acting as though she is 3 already. I can't tell you all the stories she tells. When she is not telling a story, she is reading a story. She loves to 'read' her books. She's not actually reading; however, she has all of her books memorized and she does her best to recite them! This week she has learned how to spell her first word....her name! She can spell it and read her name! Proud Momma over here.

Little Boo is busy as ever. I really don't know of any little one as busy and as naughty as him. He is in to everything and tearing apart everything. He is so smart and determined. Please, don't get in his way because you will see a side of him that I don't want you to see...naughty naughty little man when someone tells him no. He and his sister are becoming such great friends. It's so much fun to watch them play games and laugh with each other. It's simply beautiful.

I can't seem to find enough time in the day. I keep thinking about all of you, but just can't get on the computer with enough energy to write. I am sorry for my laziness. I guess working 3 days a week, raising two little ones and taking care of a home is taking all of my energies these days. I feel tired all the time and I also feel behind all the time. There just is never enough time in the day to get the things done that I need or want to get done. I need to organized my life!

Hubby is good. Busy working as well. He has been working a lot of late hours recently, so we don't see him as much as we would like. However, he is doing what he needs to do and that's fine with us as well.

We are thinking about coming home (to MN) this summer, but don't have any set plans. It is mostly dependant on work and work schedules. I know many people are asking about when we are coming...probably latter summer...however, no committments on this end at the moment. So sorry not to commit; however, those who know us best are not surprised I'm sure ;-) We miss you all and can't wait to see and hug you!

Take care.

Ugh..

This is probably not the post you have been looking forward to after my disappearance for 3 weeks and after my wonderful 2 week visit from my parents and my sister; however, this is the post that I need to do for me, tonight. I am planning to update my blog with pictures and stories from my family visit, soon...yet, tonight I feel blah and need a place to release.

I am feeling blah for a number of reasons. First, I am so sick of being sick and taking care of the sick. Haha, Imagine, I am no longer nursing the public, but rather nursing myself and my kids. We have been sick for two months now. I am so tired. Alhumdillah, the kids have finally stopped throwing up, appetites are up and the coughing is decreasing...I think they are finally towards the end of their sickness! I, on the other hand, am at the climax of my sickness. The other night I woke up from severe ear pain. To the point that I felt as though I needed to go to the ER; however, I managed the pain until I fell back asleep. The next morning I headed to the ENT and sure enough, I have bilateral ear infections with severe ear infection in the left ear-major pressure and hearing disturbances. This is currently inhibiting my ability to hear...everything is muffled with a constant ringing in my ears. I also have sinusitis and bronchitis. Essentially, I can't hear, my ears are ringing, my head hurts, my nose is full and dripping, I have a nasty cough and I'm short of breath....basically, I feel awful. All I want to do is sleep, yet there is no time for a mother of two young kids to sleep. Also, my goal for this week was to concentrate on learning my role at work.

Work. Reason number two to feel blah. I am just not getting into my new role or my new job. I must admit, the people are wonderful and the pay is good. However, I am so confused day in and day out. It seems as though no one knows what is going on, because we are all new. It is a new company with high aspirations. I feel good about many things in the job and the company; however, I just don't get it! Maybe its because I am new and it is a totally different role from nursing. Or maybe it is because I have been sick since day one, so I haven't had a clear head to grasp the concepts. Or maybe it's because they are completely unorganized and I cannot thrive in an unorganized environment. I have no one to ask questions to, noone to get clear answers from. No one to 'show me the ropes', so to speak. I am still hopeful that things will get better, but right now I am simply frustrated.

Home sick. Reason number three to feel blah. I remember when Hubby would get back to the USA after leaving Jordan or when his family would leave after an extended visit. He would be very blah and sad. I guess this is how I am feeling. I had a wonderful time with my family (posting soon to come); however, I am now more than home sick. I guess as time has past on, I started to just live in the moment and tried to make things work here in Amman. However, right now, I pretty much just want to go home. I know it's a combination of the things mentioned above and other things, and I know that many of these things will pass, but right now...I wish I was home. I wish I was back in my routine of working weekends at th e hospital and spending time with the kids and husband the rest of the week! I was quite happy with life the way it was. All though, if I remind myself that if I had stayed at the hospital, my position would have been eliminated (because it was) and things would have been different from what I enjoyed....yet, I still miss those days.

Okay, so...Inshallah, I and my kids will heal and feel better soon. Work should get better, and if not, I will look elsewhere for work. Lastly, I will be home to visit this summer. I know things will get better, it's just a matter of hanging in there until it does. Thanks for listening. Tomorrow is a new day. As always......Alhumdillah (One must never forget to thank God for what he has given us, because we are very blessed and our difficulties/challenges are just that challenges. It could always be worse. My problems and complaints are nothing to compare with what it is that I could be facing and to which others are currently facing) ALHUMDILLAH!

I Got a Job and a second Car!

Hello, hello! As you can see by my title, we have bought another car and I will soon be going to work!

The work!...It's interesting how perspective changes. For a couple months now I have been out looking for work. Not too aggressively, because I love staying home with the kids. Yet, there were days when I was saying to myself...Get me outta this house! Kids, no doubt that I love them dearly, yet I need a break once in a while. I'm sure all the stay at home Mommies can relate to those feelings, especially those with 2 little one and no transportation. However, now that I have been offered a job and start work in a few days.....Alhumdillah (Thank God), yet, um, I just want to stay home with my beautiful kids! I am going to miss those little ones so much! This question keeps coming to me, how does one drop them off in someone elses care for 8 hours?! I found a daycare that seems really nice, but all that crazy activity...is it going to make my kids crazy too!?! I have my in-laws that have offered to help out as well. I will start our first day with the kids in a familiar place, at Grandma's home "Tae-Tae's house" as Little Miss calls it. I feel good about both places. I know they are safe and will be looked after....but it won't be me, Momma, looking after them....Sigh. On the flip side, it will be great for the kids to get out and play with other kids. They will learn things from the kids at the daycare that they cannot learn from me. Our time together will also be just that much more special. It will also be good for me to get out of the house, meet new people and to use that part of my brain that has been turned off for nearly 9 months now. I will tell you more about the job once I start and know more about it myself :-)

The car!...It's a 2004 Peugeot. I don't know the model, but it's one of those little cars you often see in Europe. We don't have them, that I know of, in the US. It's a cute car that fits 4 people comfortably and 5 people if needed. We needed a second car, simply for each of us to get around town. Hubby takes the car to work and the kids and I are 'stuck' all day. So now, Alhumdillah, we have the freedom to get out, explore, shop and play! It will be great to have the second car now that I will start work too. It will also be great for when my parents and sister are here visiting in a few weeks because we will have more flexibility as well! Yeah for the new car :0) Pictures to come, I'm sure.

That's the exciting news in our home this week! I guess things are starting to feel more and more like 'home away from home' all the time. Hope you had a good week as well!
